The Sheltered Kid

I pouted, I confess. 

He caught me. He always catches me. 

“Why are you pouting, Kitten?”

Well, I had to tell him, of course.

“I pout because I am really a wretched girl, selfish and bad. I wish I were good, Sir. I just can’t help it.”

“Stand in the corner until you can give me three examples of how you’ve been wretched, cruel to someone intentionally, mean or hurtful.”

Well, I stood there quite a long time. I couldn’t think of a specific instance, no. After a while, about the time my legs started cramping and my back was aching, he came to me and took me gently by the hand and led me to his big, over-stuffed chair. 

Pulling me into his lap with my head against his shoulder, he rubbed my legs.

“You are a good girl,” he said, and I cried softly in his neck.
